    Waste News

    April 2017

Charges have been suspended with immediate effect at
    Household Waste Recycling Sites.

On Monday this week, Andrea Leadsom MP, Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, issued a statement that it is the Government’s intention to review its guidance with regard to the charges that can be made at local civic amenity sites and the specific reference to the disposal of DIY materials generated by householders.

HWRS front viewWe have suspended our charges
In order to avoid any potential confusion for our residents in West Sussex we have decided to suspend all charges for DIY type of materials until the review by the Government has been concluded (by end of 2017).

From 11 April therefore householders visiting any West Sussex amenity site will no longer be charged for the deposit of material which results from the sort of work householders would normally carry out on their homes – what most people would refer to as DIY waste.

Once the Government’s review has been concluded – expected by the end of 2017 - the County Council will look at the matter again.

    HWRS containersWas charging wrong?
We don't believe so. Its very complex. Increased demand for essential services, coupled with reduced government funding, means West Sussex County Council has to reduce its spending.

This led to our decision on 1st October 2016 to charge for residents’ “Non-Household” wastes - including DIY waste.

Introducing these charges at our West Sussex Household Waste Recycling Sites (HWRSs) enabled the council to make critical savings while still maintaining a comprehensive service for residents.

The reason the charging is complex, is all waste is coded, and the government’s classification of DIY waste in their Litter document labels it as household waste.

This is at odds with the classification under the official Waste Regulations, followed by all waste disposal authorities, where these chargeable waste streams are classified as industrial or construction and demolition waste.

For this reason, and following Ms Leadsam's statement, we are waiting along with every other authority to understand what the review's conclusions will be.

    Worthing HWRSWhat has changed?
We have changed the daily opening hours at all sites to 10:00am to 7:00pm in summer and 10:00am to 5:00pm in winter. Our sites are now following their summer schedule.

We have changed the number of days 8 out of the 11 Household Waste Recycling Sites are open to 5 days each week – all will be open weekends. (Crawley, Burgess Hill and Westhampnett are required to operate Waste Transfer Stations for kerbside collection services and will therefore remain open 7 days a week).

We no longer accepting LGV, tractor and mobile plant tyres. We charge for car and van tyres - £4 each.

We made changes to the Mobile Household Waste Recycling Service – all Chichester District mobile HWRSs are now closed, except at Selsey and the Witterings. These two mobile recycling services will now offer waste and recycling services on a fortnightly basis, on alternate Thursdays.

We are investing in an enforcement team to support the existing enforcement measures against fly tipping carried out by district and borough councils.

To read our full statement and FAQs on lifting the charges go to www.recycleforwestsussex.org/changes.

Sussex Cricket are delighted to announce that they have signed a deal with
Parafix Tapes & Conversions Ltd<http://www.parafix.com/> to be the sponsor
of their Royal London One-Day Cup shirt during the 2017 season.

Parafix is Europe's leading converter of adhesive and flexible materials,
supplying custom components into healthcare, automotive, electronics and
    industrial markets.

From their state-of-the-art facilities in Sussex and Hungary, Parafix
produce over 250 million die-cuts a year, exported to over 50 countries.

Their name will proudly be displayed on Sussex's new Royal London One-Day

will actually begin their 2017 campaign at the Home of Cricket on Thursday
27th April, when Sussex travel to face Middlesex, the first of four away
    South Group games.

The Sharks will then return to The 1st Central County Ground to entertain
Somerset on Sunday 30th April. There are also four South Group matches at
home, with Glamorgan and Surrey subsequent visitors to Hove, before the
Sharks head to The Saffrons, Eastbourne for the first time since 2000, where
they will welcome Gloucestershire on Sunday 14th May.

The knockout stages then take place in June and Sussex will have hoped to
have qualified for the latter stages of the competition ahead of the final
    at Lord's in July.

Mike Punter, Managing Director of Parafix, said, "We play an active role in
supporting our communities, including our local sports teams. We are

sponsor this season's Royal London One-Day Cup shirt.

"We look forward to welcoming Parafix back to Hove this season when we hope
Sussex will be challenging at the top of the South Group table to be in with
a shout of a Lord's final, which is a highlight of any player's career."

Lancing Business Park Warden's Blog - February 2017

After a good couple of days walking around the park, popping into business's all over the park I have to say the overriding feeling is one of positivity. My first port of call was Shoreham Vehicle Auctions and they seem to be going from strength to strength. Had a nice chat with them and an insight into their ongoing success and the changes they're making to improve the day to day running of the company.

Walking down Spencer Road Lancing Commercials are as busy as ever and DMH Motors are just as busy too, the yard next door to them which is owned by Edburtons is full up and has a long waiting list for space as well.

Progress is also going well down at Winston Business Centre, now that the road has been done all of the units are occupied and I'm liaising with the managing agents to put funding in place for a new set of gates and security fencing to the entrance while the Lancing Business Park Committee have agreed to install cameras to monitor the site 24/7 and to say this has gone down well would be an understatement.

A business that has been a recent addition to the park is Healthy Supplies Ltd, they haven't been here to long but they've already outgrown the unit they're in so I've put them in contact with another company on the park that installs mezzanine floors so hopefully that will work out for all concerned and they are one of the friendliest business's to pop in to see, lovely bunch down there.

All in all I have to say the park is extremely busy and the feedback I get is nothing but positive, the parking situation has improved dramatically, although not perfect it's a lot better than it was and thanks to Mark Quarterly and his team the park is litter picked and road swept weekly sometimes daily if they can.

I would like to say thank you to everyone I see for all the tea's and coffee's, it is very nice to see so many friendly faces.

Worthing Churches Homeless Project Homelessness Event - Friday 10th March

Worthing Churchess Homeless Project are holding a Homelessness Event tomorrow, Friday, 10th March 2017 in the Richmond Room at Worthing Assembly Hall.

With a mix of councillors, community representatives, local business people and colleagues from Worthing Homes, Worthing Churches Homeless Projects and Adur and Worthing councils, the aim of the event is to have a discussion at local level about the ‘housing crisis’ that we are hearing about in the national news.

We are aware that there are increasing demands for housing of all tenures but particularly for those on very low incomes. The event is to see if we can come together to resolve or highlight potential solutions to the problems and move forward as a community, as we are aware that continuing to do what has always been done is unlikely to prove successful.

The main event begins at 2pm with refreshments and arrival taking place from 1.45pm. The session will finish at 4pm with an opportunity for you to stay on and network should you wish to.

If you would like to attend would like to come, please email Suzanne ( snewman@worthing-homes.org.uk )
