The intestacy rules changed on 1st October this year, making it even more imperative that you make a will and make it clear where you would like your assets to go. If you don’t have a will in place, you don’t really have any control over all of your assets when you die.

Pensions - You are never too young to take control

The word “pension” is too closely linked to “pensioner”, and those of us in our 20’s and 30’s still believe this is too far in the distance to be of any concern at present. However, this simply isn’t the case. It is imperative that people in their 20’s and 30’s start laying the foundations of a good savings scheme and pension pot in order to be ready for the day we choose to retire.

A HAULAGE and warehousing firm and its ‘young achiever’ are hoping to scoop an Adur and Worthing Business Awards double later this year.

Sussex Transport, at Lancing Business Park, and employee Sian Panton, have been nominated in the medium business and young achiever categories.

Over the past year, the business has grown significantly, nearly doubling the amount of staff and increasing its turnover, thanks to some major supplier agreements.

Managing director Damian Pulford said: “Our aim is complete customer satisfaction – we listen to what our customer wants and then we deliver the service they require.

“We are investing in new vehicles, staff training and updated computer systems to ensure we can compete in the very busy and ever-changing world of transport and warehousing.

“We invest in our people and respect their input and ideas - we reward ideas, sales leads and initiative.”

The firm’s expanding fleet travels the length and breadth of the country – and occasionally overseas – storing and delivering goods from its Lancing base.

It has delivered to Wembley, Wimbledon, Glastonbury and even Buckingham Palace but also remains keen on helping local businesses with their transport needs.

HR manager Jenny Guy said: “I am proud to work for Sussex Transport and really think it’s about time the company was recognised in the community for the great work and high standards we provide locally and nationally.”

Jenny nominated her colleague, Sian, for the young achiever award, after impressing with her knowledge and enthusiasm.

Sian designed and implemented a new handbook for all current and new members of staff and helping secure a number of awards for the firm.

Jenny said: “Sian is like a breath of fresh air at Sussex Transport.

“With a wealth of enthusiasm and knowledge she has put into place procedures and policies which have brought us bang up to date with how to run a modern fleet of lorries and associated staff.

“Sian joined Sussex Transport 18 months ago and since then has been inspirational in her dedication and commitment – often taking phone calls through the night to ensure a job is completed to clients’ satisfaction.”

Sian said she was ‘overwhelmed’ to be nominated and added it was pleasing to be recognised by her peers.

Creating investment & development opportunities across the South Coast
    FacebookTwitterLinkedIn

Much has happened over the last few months in Coastal West Sussex and it's been an active summer for business and the economy. In the last edition I reported that the Strategic Economic Plan had been submitted to Government and in July, the Growth Deal was announced which has committed to invest £40m into the Coastal West Sussex area over the 6 year plan period. The projects include investments into flood defence schemes in Shoreham, roads along the Coastal West Sussex corridor and a state of the art engineering facility at Ricardo's in Shoreham.

Roads and road congestion continue to be a thorn in the side of coastal businesses; over the summer a new campaign got underway to build the case to Government for investment into the A27 across Coastal West Sussex and beyond. For too long businesses have been hampered by congestion along this road causing unreliable journey times and stop start journeys so A27 Action is asking businesses to give their views on the A27 and the impact it has on their company and staff. The case will be presented to Government in the autumn, however it's a competitive process so the stronger our case the better the chance we will have of winning. I urge you therefore to take a minute and complete the questionnaire.

Looking forward, October will see the exciting launch of a new website that has been designed by young people for young peoples from all across the CWS area to help them make their future career choices - more information will be posted on our website at www.coastalwestsussex.org.uk when it's launched. And finally, for business owners looking for some expert advice and support, a varied programme of events is on offer around the area as well as the opportunity to apply for finance to help increase turnover and profit. To find out more on this, read our article in the Latest News section.

As well as providing a wealth of information, you can keep up to date with the latest developments across Coastal West Sussex through our website's news and events listings at www.coastalwestsussex.org.uk.

    Caroline Wood
    Director, Coastal West Sussex Partnership

Rolls Royce will be welcomed into Bognor Regis as it expands its operation to create a Technology and Logistics facility on one of four sites collectively known as EnterpriseBognorRegis.

Coast to Capital Growth Deal will see major investment in Coastal West Sussex over the next six years, with the investment programme focusing on jobs, infrastructure and transport.

Have your say on the A27: businesses can join the fight for improvements to reduce congestion on the A27.

Latest report shows seaside towns in Coastal West Sussex achieve a significant growth in the tourist economy.

Local councillors believe Gatwick Airport expansion could benefit Coastal West Sussex economy.

Growth in manufacturing slowest in a year

     Engineering
     Purchasing
     Production

GDP figures show Britain’s manufacturing output saw the slowest growth since July 2013, making it 7.4% behind its level at the beginning of 2008.

The next set of figures will tell whether this is a temporary situation or if manufacturing will soon join other sectors and move into more positive territory.  Being an important component of GDP and the balance of payments, the Government will not want to see manufacturing in the UK decline any further.  There are several things that can be done to aid the sector:

    • Ensure good infrastructure and transport which avoids congestion and market failure.

The A27 is a vital transport corridor along the South Coast but with ever increasing congestion, improvement is desperately needed if economic potential is to be realised. In answer to this, the group, A27 Action, has been set up by local businesses, council leaders and local Members of Parliament, to persuade Government investment.

    • Provide good education and training for a skilled workforce

    • Avoid excessive regulation which hampers investment and employment

    • Reduce corporation tax rates (we live in hope!)

    • Provide further tax breaks and support to encourage R&D

Having recently won new contacts in both the UK and overseas markets, we are seeing strong growth at Tenkay and we are optimistic for the sector as a whole.

As well as receiving large orders from the oil and gas industries (totalling £700,000 to ship in 2014), we have won a further 2-year contract in the electric vehicles market in the UK, and a further 3-year contract manufacturing looms and controls for high-end projectors in the US at an estimated value of $386,000 (£228,000).

As export has been deemed essential for helping the recovery, we are certainly pleased to be playing our part.

What this has shown us is that manufacturing growth comes, not just from Governmental support, but from knowing and understanding our customers’ needs – and delivering them.

At Tenkay, we can take care of the complete manufacturing process for you, from procurement through to delivery, and tailor a bespoke solution that’s right for you.

Have you decided to subcontract your manufacturing, or perhaps your current supplier is the wrong fit for you? We’d be more than happy to chat through your requirements, so please give us a call today on 01903 855 464.
