Fun Food Facts for Wimbledon as Sussex Transport Make Dedicated Festival and Event Deliveries

With a fleet of HIABs, curtain side, flatbeds, Artic’s, 7.5t, 18t, Moffetts and 4×4’s, Sussex Transport can cover a wide variety of deliveries from a small package to an Artic load of materials.

As the start of the festival and events season is now upon us, we have already been asked to transport equipment to and from the Wimbledon Tennis Championships, have done some work at the Isle of Wight Festival and have been on site at a very muddy Worthy Farm for the Glastonbury Festival assisting with the set up.

This year the Wimbledon Tennis Championships will run from 27 June to 10 July – when it’s hoped the storms and rain clouds will have cleared!

Strawberries, enthusiastic crowds, famous faces and of course wall to wall television coverage, all add to the atmosphere and tradition!

As with any large event, it takes an enormous amount of co-ordination from a multitude of companies and organisers to ensure those two weeks in June run smoothly.

Ball girls and boys start training for Wimbledon in February and from the 700 local children applying for the jobs – only 250 are selected!

One strawberry at Wimbledon will set you back around 25p!

So what needs to be brought in for the event?

    •     54,250 tennis balls
    •     330,000 cups of tea and coffee
    •     230,000 bottles of water
    •     234,000 meals served
    •     320,000 glasses of Pimm’s
    •     110,000 sandwiches and baguettes
    •     25,000 scones
    •     110,000 pints of draught beer and lager
    •     16,000 portions of fish and chips
    •     44,000 litres of milk
    •     140,000 portions of English strawberries
    •     10,000 litres of dairy cream
    •     10,000 portions of frozen yoghurt
    •     29,000 bottles of champagne
    •     5,000 kilos of bananas (for players)
    •     86,000 ice cream portions
    •     30,000 stone baked pizzas

That’s some shopping list for the organisers!

This year we are delivering supplies to Wimbledon in one of our 18t vehicles.   Satellite tracking means the client can be informed of where their delivery is at every leg of the journey ensuring a professional job from start to finish.

For more information on what we can do for you – why not call one of our dedicated team on 01903 751100 or drop us an e-mail at info@sussextransport.com

We like to think that we offer a championship delivery service! so we’d LOVE to hear from you!

Coast to Capital export survey 2016

Coast to Capital LEP recognise the significant proportion of economic growth in our region will come from businesses trading internationally. Coast to Capital and its partners surveyed companies four years ago and we want to gauge the current level of international export activity to understand trends and related issues. This is being done in the form of a survey, which is linked here: http://goo.gl/forms/DgLUHsuoj1P1tgE22

Findings from the survey will help Coast to Capital, and its partners, focus funding on initiatives and programmes to help small and medium sized businesses explore new international markets.

We would be very grateful if you complete the linked survey which should take no more than 10 minutes to complete.  We will publish findings from the survey in a report to follow. Please feel free to pass this survey on to whoever you feel it is relevant.

One year on – A look at the impact of our new SMT line

      SMT Placement Line
At Tenkay Electronics, we strive to provide the best service for our customers. To do this, we invest in the latest technology to improve the quality of our offering.

For our SMD pick and place processing, we installed the new Yamaha iPulse M20 SMD placement machine for its high accuracy and adaptability. Whether we’re placing components on 1 or 10,000 PCB’s, the M20 has the most exacting technology that will achieve accuracy even with the most hard to place boards.

Read our blogs for more about the capabilities and installation of our new machine.

In keeping with the iPulse philosophy of designing flexible, high specification SMT placement machines, the new M20 series addresses both current and future manufacturing requirements. This will enable us to cater to future customer needs as required, while maintaining and improving existing services.

Many standard features usually associated with machines of much higher cost are included, such as controlling the downward pressure of placement, board warp detection and continuous monitoring of machine accuracy. The range of feeder bank and optional tray handling configurations also allows for very fast product turnarounds.

Since its installation, the M20 has doubled our PCB SMT output speed, whilst continuing to provide a better quality product with more placement accuracy.

The recent addition of our new PCB Engineer, Rares, has refreshed how we operate at Tenkay, and provided insight into how we might improve a number of areas within the PCB section of the business, areas such as tooling control and component storage. Rares has previous experience dealing with high volume production, and it’s this experience that has helped us to further optimise our manufacturing processes, as well as improve our efficiencies.

Now that we have more resources, the responsibility of the SMT programming has shifted to the Engineering department, which has given us more control. Furthermore, new PCB Engineering methods have been adopted throughout the PCB area, to ease the creation of production documentation, which will reduce customer queries and delays.

If you need to subcontract part of your manufacturing process and need a reliable partner, call us today to see what we can do.

Can you help a local Year 12 Student find their Nuffield Placement?

Several excellent Sussex Year 12 students are seeking 4-6 week summer Nuffield research placements. Anyone working in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering or Maths) role can be a placement provider.

How can taking on a Nuffield student benefit to your company?

    • Developing your future workforce - the placements make a profound and lasting impact on a student's education and future career.
    • Development of teaching and mentoring skills - particularly useful for PhD students, postdoctoral researchers and staff looking to gain management experience.
    • Potential contributions to published papers or grant applications.
    • Contributing to pilot or side projects your staff struggle to find time for.
    • Demonstrating your company's commitment to public engagement and corporate social responsibility

To see the student bios and the type of placements they are looking for click here. If you are interested in taking on a student please email Nuffield@brighton.ac.uk.

    STEM Ambassador Programme

STEM Sussex are looking for more STEM ambassadors within the Health and Life Sciences community. Have you any staff members that you think would benefit from being a STEM Ambassador?

Why is the STEM Ambassador programme good for employers?

By supporting your employees' participation in the STEM Ambassador programme, you give them a brilliant opportunity to motivate young learners whilst developing their own communication, presentation and planning skills, and promoting your company to your local community.

How can my company get involved?

You can sign up any number of employees, from 1 to 1000! The only requirement is that they are interested in volunteering with young people, have some sort of background in Science, Technology, Engineering or Maths, and are willing to take part in at least one activity a year. Your employees could be involved in mentoring, company visits, classroom support (talks or practical activities), or big events like the Big Bang Fair South East. STEM Sussex send out a newsletter to all ambassadors every fortnight which details our current school requests - or you can always offer your services if you'd like to do something specific.

    What happens next?

All ambassadors must attend a short induction session and obtain a DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check with us before they are considered an approved STEM Ambassador and can start volunteering. Volunteers can sign up at https://db.stemnet.org.uk/register/ambassador - or you can contact STEM Sussex at ambassadors@brighton.ac.uk if you have any questions.

If you have any opportunities or stories that you would like to share, please email Rachael.merriman@westsussex.gov.uk.

    Newsletter April 2016

    Dear Constituent

Welcome to my April newsletter 2016 and hopefully to Spring though the weather seems to be showing little sign of that at the moment. Thank you to all those of you who have been to my ‘Talk to Tim’ public meetings so far where there has certainly been a lot of interest about the forthcoming EU Referendum. There are still 55 days to go and I will be holding further meetings to try to engage as many people as possible in this vitally important constitutional issue. I have been approached by a number of local organisations who are looking to arrange hustings with speakers from both sides of the debate and will hold off organising my own further meetings until those dates have been finalised.

I was delighted also with the response to our biggest ever pensioners’ fair held at the Guildbourne Centre in Worthing last Friday. This has become a regular feature now and I am grateful for all those who put in such a lot of hard work to make it a success. I will continue to update the special sections on my website as news comes in on things such as the local rail service and upgrades to the A27.

Meanwhile, the proposed closure of ticket offices by Southern has rather hit the buffers at the moment as both the trade unions and Passenger Focus have lodged their objections and it is now being considered by the Minister who I have spoken to. I have posted a letter from GTR from April 14th on my website which answers some of the upstanding issues raised at the public meeting I held in Shoreham too. Adding to passenger woes there was of course a strike earlier this week which caused major disruption. This is over the proposal to bring in driver-only operated trains. For the sake of balance I have published below the letters from both the GTR management and the RMT union with their respective positions on the action.

As regards the A27 we remain in a ‘limbo period’ until the Highways Agency produce their latest proposals which are still expected in November. I am aware that a number of residents’ groups held a meeting earlier this week and expressed concerns about the likely proposals involving duelling the A27 through Worthing and there was support for a bypass option running north of Worthing. This had already been ruled out in the earlier scoping work as representatives of the residents’ groups know who sit on the A27 Working Party chaired by Councillor Tom Wye, and who are specifically there to feedback to residents and represent their views. I know no more than them about the likely plans at the moment and will post everything I have on my website but again we are unlikely to have much more detail until November after which there will inevitably be an extensive public consultation exercise.

I hope you have noticed the video podcasts that I have been posting on my website (www.timloughton.com) and Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/TimLoughtonEWAS/) recently which is proving very effective way of updating constituents with my position on various topical issues. Do let me know what you think.

    Best wishes

    Tim Loughton MP
Member of Parliament for East Worthing & Shoreham
