    Parliamentary Newsletter - May 2015

    Dear Residents,

I am delighted to have been re-elected as the MP for East Worthing & Shoreham at the General Election on May 7th. The full results are given below and I am particularly honoured to have received the highest share of the vote since the constituency was formed in 1997. Thank you to everyone for your support.

As always it is my intention to repay that trust by continuing to focus on the issues that matter to people most in our constituency and by providing a strong voice for Sussex people in Parliament. Top of the list of local issues will of course be seeing through the improvements to the A27 and this was a hot topic during the election campaign with the suggestion that an alternative government might delay the scheme. I will also continue to fight to make sure that our popular Worthing Hospital remains one of the best and safest in the country able to look after the growing demands of our growing population. Another priority will be to continue to fight against inappropriate and excessive development on some of our sensitive remaining areas of open space and on Worthing seafront, and for long overdue regeneration in Southwick and Lancing centres in particular.

In Parliament one of the most important pledges of the new Government was to deliver an In/Out referendum on our future membership of the EU and I look forward to delivering on that pledge and provoking a lively debate on the merits of the options facing us.

Above all I want to remain an MP deeply engaged in the community accessible to local people. The day after the election result I resumed my latest street surgery in a very wet Shoreham Farmer's Market and I will post details of our regular round of street surgeries on my website and in this monthly email as usual. Please remember that I am here for all my constituents however you voted or whether you are too young to vote. If you think I can help then it is easy to contact me and I will be delighted to hear from you.

The new Government will lay out what it wants to do in the coming Parliamentary year at the Queen's Speech on Wednesday 27th May and I will include a report in next month's newsletter.

    Kind regards,

    Tim

Workplace Health Week launching today (18th May)

This week we are proud to be hosting our very first Workplace Health Week. A week dedicated to raising awareness of the importance of adding a bit of activity in and around your working day.

Sign in to your Workplace Challenge profile and check out the events section to see some of the great activities taking place throughout the week.

Below are just three simple ways you can get involved in Workplace Health Week.

    1. Midday Mile

    Midday Mile - get involved

This Wednesday 20th May at 12noon, businesses across the country are being invited to walk, jog, cycle, run or even kayak one mile for the first national Workplace Challenge Midday Mile.

A fantastic opportunity to not only rally the troops in the office to get up off their swivel chairs and stretch their legs, but also an opportunity to support our charity partner, the British Heart Foundation.

Here are five ways you can make the most of the Midday Mile.

    2. Get your boss on board

    Take the pledge

All throughout Workplace Health Week we're urging your employer's to make a commitment to taking Workplace Health seriously. Ask you boss to get on board by signing up to Workplace Challenge and taking our Workplace Health Pledge.

    3. Make your personal pledge to workplace health & inspire others!

    Make your personal pledge

Make your own personal pledge to look after your workplace health – what small change can you make to add activity in and around your working day? Perhaps take the stairs instead of the lift, join a local netball league or perhaps beat the boss on the boardroom table at instant ping (table tennis).

Download your personal pledge card, write down what you're planning to do, then share your pledge onto our Facebook page or tweet us via @WorkplaceChall using #WorkHealth2015. Your pledge might inspire others to take the step to get more active, research has shown that we are more likely to be active if it is seen as 'normal' and if our friends and peers are active too!

    Keep it social

We look forward to following you on your journey towards a more active lifestyle, share your story with us:

     The Tenkay Team is Growing

Thanks to continued growth and demand, Tenkay has recently employed a number of new team members across its shop floors.

We would like to take this opportunity to introduce you to (from left to right):

Back row: Rory Slattery, WIRE01 Team Leader who rejoins Tenkay and Chris Crawford, WIRE03.
Middle row: Katarzyna Okrzes, WIRE01, Julie Standing, PCB and Helen Lynn, PCB.
Front row: Leanne Barratt, WIRE01 and Beverley Gray, PCB.

Because of this expansion of our 50 strong team and the additional space required to hold our increased output (for both export and domestic product), we have had to make some changes to the layout of our premises. Thank you to the team for your help and patience as we make these improvements.

With all this positive change for Tenkay, we were surprised by CBI’s new report which finds British manufacturing growth and exports has slowed in the last quarter. You can read the Insider Media article here.

    Workplace Health Week Is Coming!

Active Sussex are proud to announce that Workplace Health Week will be happening between Monday 18th May 2015 and Friday 22nd May 2015.

    Here's how to get involved.

    1. Make the Pledge

    Pledge Card

We're asking all workplaces to make a healthy workplace pledge using our pledge card. It could be, for example, to 'Organise a Midday Mile' and 'Swap all office biscuits for fruit and nuts.'

The first three Sussex organisations to tweet us a picture of their pledge cards @activesussex will receive a fantastic 'Instant Table Tennis' set.

    2. Organise a Midday Mile on Wednesday May 20th

    Midday Mile

It's as simple as it sounds! We're asking you to get out of the office at lunchtime and walk, run or cycle a mile. In fact, you can cover a mile however you want to. Use this as an opportunity to change your lunchtime routine for a day, go outside and get some fresh air.

    3. Get an 'Instant Ping!' set and play 'Beat the Boss'

    Instant Ping!

Instant 'Ping Pong' is easy to set up and can be played pretty much anywhere you have a clear table. Set up a work league over the week and see if you can finish higher than your boss!

    4. Workplace Champion Training

    Become a Champion

Aimed at people with a remit for, or an interest in, health at their workplace. Learn how to get the most from the Workplace Challenge, the British Heart Foundation Health at Work programme and apply to your workplace!

Whether you're a health coordinator, HR officer, volunteer champion or a general manager, the Workplace Challenge Champion training will give you the skills, confidence and resources to promote better health and increase participation in sport and physical activity in your organisation.

The training is delivered in partnership by the BHF Health at Work team and County Sports Partnership Network.

    Taking the Lead on Investment

The latest statistics from the manufacturing sector are a strange mixture of good and puzzling. On the one hand, the rise in the respected Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) from 53.1 in January to 54.1 in February indicates quite clearly that sector sales are on an upward trend which, according to a recent editorial published by Insider Media, reflects an increase in domestic demand for goods.

Manufacturing activity is reported to be at its highest since last July while factory costs are said to be falling at their fastest rate for six years.

Against such a buoyant background it seems odd…
