For years we have heard phrases like 'Net Zero', 'Cut carbon emissions' and 'Go green', but for businesses this is a potential minefield, especially after having to navigate the COVID19 nightmare for more than a year.

The government made a G7 pledge to cut carbon emissions by 78% by 2035; end the sale of new petrol and diesel cars by 2030 and is asking businesses to exchange polluting vehicles for clean ones. In the current economic climate, businesses are understandably cautious when it comes to new expenditure, electing to safeguard their business survival over investment in green technology. We all appreciate that things need to change, but for businesses it is crucial that change is in line with operational needs, with carefully managed steps towards Net Zero.

LBP has therefore been working with Rivervale Leasing to identify an initial change that could help set a business on the route to Net Zero. Rivervale Leasing has provided the data to calculate the true cost of choosing electric over fossil fuels when considering your next company lease car and the data is surprising!

It is not just the savings you can achieve by charging rather than refuelling, there are also several tax benefits that mean electric vehicles can provide substantial savings when compared to their Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) equivalents. Did you know that by choosing a Tesla over a petrol E Class Mercedes you could save £25K over three years?

Electric vehicle batteries have leapt forward in recent years, now providing around 250 miles per charge on a larger vehicle, taking round 40 minutes to fully recharge at a rapid charging point. The roll-out of public charging points has commenced with garages, supermarkets and Council’s providing this vital infrastructure, along with mobile apps to map the locations and book slots. Alternatively, you can even charge without a charging point being installed, as you can just plug into your mains connection when you get home and by the morning your battery will be replenished, or if it is an option, you could plug in at work.

Rivervale Leasing has provided data to compare a small, mid-range and executive electric car option with their fossil fuel ICE equivalent, to help explain the savings from leasing, fuel, benefit-in-kind payments and charging times.

In addition to the savings calculated, electric cars also enjoy:

This week LBP completed a full audit of all the potholes, road cracks and pavement hazards across the park.

Many of the public highways on the park consist of a concrete base covered with a tarmac surface. When the tarmac breaks up it exposes the concrete causing shallow potholes to form.

The County Councils Safety Plus Policy states that potholes must exceed a depth of 40mm (golf ball) and a width of 150mm to qualify for repair. Unfortunately due to the concrete base, some of the potholes on the park do not exceed the depth requirement and therefore currently do not qualify for repair.

LBP has reported all the issues which appear to meet the County's requirements, along with seam cracking and pavement trip hazards. LBP has forwarded photographs of each issue for West Sussex Highways to consider.

West Sussex Highways have confirmed that they will be sending out a Highways Steward to review each of the issues reported and will raise repair works in accordance with their policy.

As part of the government’s roadmap to cautiously lift restrictions, businesses of all sizes, including those with fewer than 50 employees, can register from today to order free lateral flow tests for their employees.

Around 1 in 3 people with coronavirus don’t have symptoms, which means they could be spreading the virus in workplaces without knowing. Rapid testing detects cases quickly – in under 30 minutes – meaning positive cases can isolate immediately, breaking chains of transmission.

Regular testing could be the difference between a workplace being able to stay open and operational, or needing to close due to a COVID-19 outbreak. It will form a crucial part of the government’s plan to gradually and safely ease restrictions as we get back to a more normal life.

So far over 3,500 businesses are signed up to offer workplace testing programmes, and over 14,000 have registered their interest in offering rapid testing, with many already rolling tests out.

Businesses have until 31 March to register for the government’s workplace testing scheme, which will remain free until the end of June. All those who can work from home should continue to do so.

Health Secretary Matt Hancock said "Regular workplace testing is a vital part of our route back to normal life, which is why I’m very pleased that we’re now expanding our offer of free workplace testing to businesses of all sizes, including SMEs.

These rapid tests will allow positive cases of Covid-19 to be..."

Each stage of the roadmap is subject to four conditions being met, with Stage 1 due to come into force on 8th and 29th March.

    • Consider the resumption of international travel - The outcome of this review is expected on 12th April
    • Potential role of Covid-status certification in helping venues to open safely
